Where AI Helps a UK Law Firm — and Where It Should Not

AI is useful in a law firm when it saves a fee-earner from retyping. It is dangerous when it pretends to give legal advice. That line is not a slogan. It is how you stay SRA-aware and how you keep client trust.

On law firm builds we treat AI as a clerk, not a partner. The Stonebridge work is about intake and diary — the parts that should never invent an answer.

Good uses

Sorting incoming enquiries by matter type. Drafting a first summary of a long email for a human to check. Filling a form from a document the client already uploaded. Suggesting the next admin step, not the legal one.

Bad uses

A public chatbot that answers “can I be deported” or “is this a good settlement”. Clients will treat that as advice. Your COLP will not thank you. Neither will Google if the answers are wrong.

Keep a human in the loop

Anything that reaches a client should be checked. Logs should show who approved it. If you cannot explain where the text came from, do not put it on the letterhead.

We can add careful automation to a site we build. Ask us what we would automate — and what we would leave alone.
